Farmers have been asked to work towards using natural methods of enriching soil, since healthy soil, yields healthy food Albert Kakande, CEO Masulita and Gombe Agroecology Participatory Guarantee System(MEMAGO PGS) group has said.
He said that farmers should also embrace indigenous crops and seeds which carry in them several nutritional values like flavonoids, alkaloids that play important roles in our bodies.
Kakande said this during the recently ended Harvest Money Expo Organized by Vision Group which took place 23-25 at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds under the theme, Farming As a Business.
‘Food which is grown on soil that is enriched using artificial methods contains traces of agrochemicals, which brings about their accumulation in the body when eaten leading to several chronic diseases. In line with this, our theme at the Harvest Money Expo 2024 was ‘Knowing what you eat’ aiming at creating awareness about the dangers of consuming food which contains traces of agrochemicals’ Kakande said.
He added that MEMAGO Agroecology PGS Group is also a Multiplier on the the Knowledge Hub for Organic Agriculture and Agroecology in Eastern Africa (KHEA) one of the five Knowledge Hubs under Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) Association a network of Civil Society Organizations / NGOs working with Small-scale farmers in East, central and Southern Africa.
