Mulberry is a rare, indigenous crop grown on a small scale in Uganda.
Arthur Blick, a renowned figure in the world of sports who actively played a big role in rugby, boxing, swimming, basketball and bike cycling grows the fruit on a large scale.
After getting involved in an accident at Kakindu stadium in Jinja that left his spinal code damaged, he found solace in mulberry.
‘’Mulberry is my life. My life changed since I decided to grow this precious crop,’’ he said.
His farm is located in Kinsisi village, Mukono district.
Under his Mpaata Agro Tourism Ltd, he grows, processes and adds value to mulberry by turning it into wine.
On a 50-acre land, Blick also grows oranges, mangoes, avocados and ganja.
Growing mulberry
- Plant cuttings from a mature tree.
- Dig holes about 2×2 feet deep and apply enough manure.
- Choose a spot that receives partial sunlight.
- Irrigate regularly during the first year of planting and in the dry season.
- Fertilize for high fruit yields.
- Spray to control battles pests that attack mulberry stems.
- Prune off the top branch to enable the tree to bear side branches on which fruits will grow.
