Students who attended the School Farm Camp at Gayaza High School were trained in adding value to food crops such as sweet potatoes, cassava and vitamin A-rich maize.
The training was conducted by a team of researchers from the National Crops Resources Research Institute led by Sam Wamani last week.
Students were introduced to bread making from sweet potato flour, cakes, cookies, and composite flour among others.
Students from over 80 schools attended the farm camp organized by the school with support from FAO, Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries, among others.
Running under the theme of ‘exploring the entrepreneurial opportunities along the agriculture value chain’, the camp was aimed at preparing students for agribusiness and entrepreneurship in the new curriculum.
Apart from value addition, students were introduced to managing and operating agricultural machinery, and urban farming among others.
