Farmers in Sheema district have hailed Vision Group for starting the Best Farmers Competition.
Mugisha Katera, a farmer and resident of Rutunguru cell-Kyarukunda ward-Bugongi town council in Sheema Municipality, said the project has created a broad-based learning avenue for various farmers across the country.
“As farmers, we can not stop thanking the Vision Group for the Best Farmers competition, it has brought back hope in farmers to recognize farming as a profitable venture,” Mugisha, 63 years added.
Mugisha who earns a monthly income of sh1m from a semi-zero grazing project looks at dairy farming as his pension and challenges people to invest in it.
Elly Muhoozi Ndeta from Kasana sub-county and other farmers want agriculture programs aired on Vision Group platforms to be given enough time (preferably two hours) to give farmers ample time to grasp enough information.
According to Joshua Kato, New Vision’s editor in charge of agriculture projects, this year marks 10 years since the Best Farmers Competition started.
“Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, we shall be running the 9th edition,” said Kato.
The competition runs in 10 sub-regions, and in each, one winner is produced.
Farmers tipped
Mugisha who produces between 150-200 litres of milk every day, emphasized proper feeding as a key factor for a farmer to generate good litres of milk from dairy farming.
“If you love a cow, feed it well, give it enough water and other supplements like salt, with that a cow will give you good litres of milk,” he stated.
He advised farmers to always employ farmers who are passionate about farming and maintain cleanliness at the farm as it attracts the market.
