If you have leftover plastic PVC pipes at your site or home, consider recycling them.
You can turn them into versatile gardens for vegetables and spices.
Steven Kirumira, a gardener says, these plumbing pipes make good gardens that can be put anywhere in the back or front yard.
In the compound, they help decorate the compound.
Giida Kaaya, another gardener in Mukono district adds that it is easy to recycle the pipes.
“You don’t need to hire someone to do it for you. It’s a Do It Yourself (DIY) project,” she says.
For example, she says, it takes her a few minutes to cut out the holes before planting and hanging the pipes. She also uses the short, leftover pieces as planters for her succulent plants.
“I fix the pipe in the ground to a height that works for me. After, I add soil and plant flowers,” she says.
You can also create different heights for visual interest.
How to make the vertical gardens
According to Kirumira, measure and cut the PVC pipes to the desired length.
If they are more than one piece, ensure they are equal.
Cut holes and smooth the edges before filling the tube with well-mixed soil.
You can plant vegetables and spices such as mint. Remember to add draining holes as well.
You can also use the pipes for hydroponic (water) gardening.
