The King of Toro, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru, has asked his subjects to embrace modern farming as a business.
The king made the call on Saturday during his visit to Butunduzi town council in Mwenge county, Kyenjojo district.
During the visit, Oyo toured farming projects that, among others, included a modern coffee farm and a bee-keeping project.
“Take advantage of the current rains to grow enough food for home consumption and for sale, to be able to increase your household incomes,” he said.
The king rallied the youth to take on coffee farming as a career.
“Farming is the backbone of our country’s economy and the youth being the majority, they should ably position themselves to engage in commercial agriculture,” he said.
Oyo said with the current improved coffee clones that are high-yielding, one does not necessarily need a huge piece of land to grow coffee.
“Start with the little that you have and keep expanding as you progress,” he advised.
