Dr Geoffrey Arinaitwe, the director at National Coffee Research Institute (NaCORI), Kituuza in Mukono district says that recently, they released three new coffee varieties which are more productive.
He explains that in addition to the six lines released earlier (KR1,3-7), mainly looking at addressing the coffee wilt problem, they recently released KR8-10, which are more productive.
“KR10 is a more productive and profitable variety. With proper agronomic practices, such as proper spacing, weeding, spraying, fertiliser application and rains, one can harvest 50% to 70% screen 18 beans which is the most expensive grade,” he says.
These varieties, however, are still with nursery bed operators for multiplication although some farmers have started getting plantlets.
He said this during Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga’s visit at NaCORI.
