Over 120 farmers in Kkungu parish have been passed out to engage in the Integrated Livelihood programme, which is run by Kiyinda Mityana Catholic Diocese.

The farmers have undergone a full year training and preparation, which is expected to enable them to succeed in this programme.

The programme, which is run under Caritas, started in this diocese a few years ago in some parishes and now has been extended and launched in Kkungu parish, which is located in Kassanda district.

The parish covers areas including Bukuya town council, Bukuya sub-county, Kijuna, Kitumbi, Mpirizi and Makokoto sub-counties in Kassanda.

While launching the programme, Caritas director in Kiyinda Mityana Diocese Fr Micheal Mukasa asked the Government to construct the roads in the district so that the residents can easily transport their products to the market.

“We are setting off and soon, we shall need better transport, but the roads are too bad that they need to be worked on,” he said.

He cited the road that starts from Myanzi trading centre on Mubende highway through Kassanda to Kiboga and said it needs to be tarmacked.

Fr Mukasa introduced Dan Brabec, a visitor from US and commended him for funding the programme.

Thirty in-calf Friesian cows were donated to farmers. Sixty farmers also got pigs while 27 got goats.

In the full year of preparation, the farmers have constructed cow sheds, planted pasture and prepared gardens where they will get food for the animals, home consumption and selling.

Fr Max Ssekiwala, the parish priest, welcomed the programme and commended the bishop and the funders.

Bukuya County Member of Parliament Dr Michael Bukenya promised the beneficiaries that plans for the construction of the Myanzi-Kiboga road are under way.
