The price maize has stabilized after a significant drop in exports to Kenya.
The farm gate price has stabilized at an average of Sh1,500 per kg while in Kampala it is at Sh1,600 for the last two weeks
Edward Tatwale, a maize grain miller and dealer in Kisenyi said a lot of maize was exported to Kenya in the last few months that had partly satisfied the the local demand.
‘The quantities of maize that Kenyans Imported from Uganda was enough to push them to their harvest season,” said Tatwale.
Stabilized prices have a had a multiplier impact on otter maize byproducts like maize flour which has stabilized at an average S135,000 per 50 Kgs bag.
The price for maize bran has also significantly dropped to an average Sh750 per kg.
Tatwale said the drop in price for maize bran is due limited demand as many poultry farmers dropped out business during the recent drop in price for eggs and high prices for feeds and vaccines .
Chris Kaijuka the chairman for the Grain Council of Uganda said the demand for maize is still open in the regional .
He said farmers should yarn for abnormal profits and should not be excited to sell off that for their own consumption .
Juma Busulwa a maize farmer and dealer in Mpigi said the current season for planted is so far doing well with the consistent down pour .
However he said some other cropped intercepted with maize mainly beans have been affected by the currently heavy rains and expect less harvest as compared to their expectation.
