Makerere University and Busitema University students have been asked to apply for this years’ Israel Agro –Studies Apprenticeship program for the year 2023-2024.
Information from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) adds that the call is targeting continuing and undergraduate students, who missed out on the first call for applications.
The first call ended on 14th of April. For new applicants, deadline is 5th May 2023, according to information from CAES website.
The program that kicked off in 2013 is aimed at exposing students to modern farming practices and technologies, that could transform Uganda’s agriculture but also create employment in the agricultural value chain for graduates.
Students who go to Israel take part in day to day activities on the farm to learn from the experts.
An example is Razak Omia a former student at CAES, who after getting exposure on one of the farms in Israel, established his own company in 2016 that offers advisory services with farmers in addition to the supply of agro inputs. Currently the company employs close to 50 people directly and about 100 indirectly.
