How To Install A Motorised Water System On Your Farm

Lillian Nakimuli, a vegetable farmer, is eager to install a motorised water system to enhance her farm’s productivity.

 “I want to first know how it can be done and how much it can cost me,” she says. Like many farmers, Nakimuli understands that having a reliable and efficient irrigation system is key to maximising yields and ensuring a steady supply of fresh produce.

Water is a crucial resource for any successful farming venture, and installing a motorised water system can greatly improve efficiency and productivity.

Modern irrigation methods ensure that crops receive the right amount of water at the right time, reducing waste and increasing yields.

Goretti Bagaya, a renowned commercial farmer from Kyamasongya village in Kabarole district, says before installing a motorised water system, it is important to evaluate your farm’s water requirements.

She explains the importance of determining the size of your farm, the type of crops grown, and the available water sources. “You need to know how much water your crops require and the best method to deliver it efficiently,” she advises.

Choose the right water source

A reliable water source is essential for an effective irrigation system. Options include boreholes, rivers, lakes, or reservoirs. Isaac Malinga, a winner of the 2017 Vision Group Best Farmer’s competition, highlights the importance of ensuring that your water source can sustain your irrigation needs.

 Select the appropriate pump

Wilberforce Mukasa, the acting chairman of the Uganda National Plumbers Association, says the pump is the heart of a motorised water system.

It moves water from the source to the irrigation system. Farmers can choose from different types of pumps, including diesel, petrol, electric, or solar-powered models.

Mukasa notes that solar-powered pumps are cost-effective in the long run, though the initial installation cost may be high.

 “I opted for a solar-powered pump because it reduces my operational costs and works efficiently,” Bagaya says.

 Install the piping system

A well-laid piping system ensures water reaches all sections of the farm. Malinga explains that PVC pipes are commonly used due to their durability and resistance to corrosion. “You should design your piping system to minimise water loss and ensure maximum coverage of your crops,” he recommends.

Set up the irrigation system

There are several irrigation methods to choose from, including drip irrigation, sprinklers, and furrow irrigation. Drip irrigation is highly efficient as it delivers water directly to the roots, reducing wastage.

Bagaya prefers this system because it conserves water while keeping her crops healthy. “With drip irrigation, I use less water but still achieve high yields,” she notes.

Test and maintain the system

According to Mukasa once the installation is complete, the system should be tested to ensure it functions correctly. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning filters, checking for leaks, and servicing the pump, will keep it running smoothly.

Malinga stresses that maintenance is key to a long-lasting irrigation system. “Routine checks help prevent breakdowns and ensure efficiency,” he says.
