Goretti Bagaya, a successful vegetable farmer from Fort Portal, has been cultivating green ice lettuce for several years.

She believes that this crunchy, refreshing leafy vegetable has not only become a staple in her own catering business but also offers great potential for other farmers looking to diversify and increase their earnings.

Bagaya explains that green ice lettuce is a high-demand crop in both local markets and restaurants due to its crisp texture and refreshing taste.

“Lettuce, especially the green ice variety, is becoming more popular as more people embrace healthier eating habits.

It’s rich in nutrients and has a refreshing crunch, making it perfect for salads and sandwiches,” she says.

Grow in cool conditions

According to Bagaya, lettuce thrives in cooler climates, which makes Fort Portal’s high-altitude environment ideal for cultivation.

She advises farmers to plant lettuce in shaded areas or use greenhouses during hotter months to protect the delicate leaves from excessive heat.

Consistent watering

“Lettuce loves moisture but doesn’t like being waterlogged,” Bagaya says. “Ensure you water regularly, especially in dry seasons, but make sure the soil drains well.”

This helps prevent root rot and keeps the leaves fresh and crisp.

Harvest at the right time

Timing is essential for lettuce growers. Bagaya notes, “To get the best out of green ice lettuce, you need to harvest it while it’s still young and tender. If left too long, the leaves can become bitter and tough.”

Value addition

Beyond just growing lettuce, Bagaya emphasizes the importance of adding value to the crop.

“In my catering business, I use lettuce in salads, wraps, and garnishes. Farmers can sell fresh lettuce directly to restaurants or pack it for supermarkets. With the growing demand for ready-to-eat vegetables, you can also explore options like pre-washed, packaged lettuce for busy customers.”

Bagaya encourages farmers to tap into the growing trend of healthy eating.

“Lettuce is not just for high-end restaurants anymore. There’s a growing demand for it in households, schools, and hotels. Explore various markets and don’t hesitate to promote the health benefits of your produce.”
