Basil, locally known as mujaaja in Uganda, is more than just a fragrant herb; it is a treasure trove of health and culinary benefits.

For herbal farmers Evanice Manyiraho and renowned herbalist Dr Twaha Kakooza, basil represents a vital resource for both wellness and livelihood.

Known for its versatility, basil thrives across Uganda’s varied climates, offering therapeutic, culinary, and even spiritual uses.

Manyiraho, emphasises that basil requires moderate care to flourish.

“The plant does well in loamy soils rich in organic matter,” she explains.

“Start by planting seeds or cuttings in well-drained soil, preferably in a sunny spot but away from harsh winds.”

She recommends watering the plants regularly but avoiding overwatering, which could lead to root rot.

Basil thrives in both home gardens and small pots, making it accessible to everyone, even urban dwellers.

Dr Kakooza adds that organic methods yield the best results.

“Use natural compost to enrich the soil and avoid chemical fertilisers,” he advises.

“This keeps the basil free from harmful residues, especially if it’s intended for medicinal purposes.”

Basil requires consistent attention for optimal growth. Manyiraho highlights the importance of pruning.

“Regularly pinch off the top leaves to encourage bushy growth and prevent the plant from flowering too early,” she explains.

Removing flowers ensures that the plant’s energy is focused on leaf production, which is where the herb’s potency lies.

Pests and diseases can also threaten basil crops.

Dr Kakooza suggests natural remedies to combat these challenges.

“A simple solution of garlic and chili spray can deter pests, while neem oil works wonders for fungal issues,” he says.

Proper spacing between plants also promotes air circulation, reducing the risk of disease.

Uses of Basil

Both experts agree that basil is a versatile herb with numerous applications.

“In herbal medicine, basil is known for its calming properties,” says Dr. Kakooza.

“It is used to treat colds, indigestion, and stress-related ailments.”

He recommends steeping fresh leaves in hot water to make a soothing tea. Basil oil, extracted from the leaves, is another potent remedy for respiratory issues and skin conditions.

Manyiraho also notes basil’s role in the kitchen.

“The aromatic leaves are a fantastic addition to soups, stews, and salads,” she says.

Basil pairs especially well with tomatoes and can elevate any dish with its unique flavour.
