It is important to know the water quality of your fish pond, since it determines the production of the fish.
To do this, you need water quality testing kits. These can be got from agro-input stores in Kampala. These include a pH metre, which determines whether the water is neutral, acidic or alkaline.
If it is acidic, then you have to apply conditioners, such as ‘fertilising’ the water using organic materials, such as animal dung, to reduce the acidity levels.
There is also the multi-parameter metre, which measures the amount of oxygen, temperature, pH and conductivity.
Fish thrive on oxygen, and if there is not enough of it, their lives are in danger. Very hot temperature is also unpleasant for fish growth. The recommended pH for fish is 6.5.
