Tomato production is an important aspect of Uganda’s economy as well as a food source for many people.

However, the unpredictable rainfall patterns make tomatoes susceptible to diseases and pests.

Henry Sekyewa, an agronomist tips farmers on how to grow tomatoes for better returns.

-Buy tomato seeds that are resistant to diseases and pests from certified dealers. Sekyewa says there are many such varieties on the market.

-Plant tomato seedlings 18 inches apart. Put a stake near each plant and tie the tomato stem to it loosely. Do not allow tomato plants to grow on the ground-the tomatoes will not during the rainy season.

-Supervise the tomato plants closely and direct the plants on stakes as the tomatoes increase in number. If aphids or other insects appear spray with a proper insecticide immediately.

-Remove weeds near tomato plants as they appear to reduce competition for nutrients.

-Avoid using herbicides because they tamper with the soil composition.

-Water plants only when the soil is dry.

-Avoid using insecticides and fungicides on tomato plants unnecessarily. Simple pest control methods like animal urine are better options for pesticides.
