The Harvest Money Expo, taking place at Namboole Stadium from February 14 to 16, is arming farmers with the knowledge they need to take their coffee farming to the next level.
Under the theme, Farming as a Business, this year’s expo is focusing on value addition, cooperatives and how it can boost both yields and income. With global coffee consumption at an all-time high, Uganda’s coffee farmers have an incredible opportunity to meet demand by improving their farming techniques and adding value at the farm level.
Joseph Nkandu, the Executive Director of the National Union of Coffee Agribusinesses and Farm Enterprises NUCAFE, spoke to farmers about the global coffee economy:
“Coffee is one of the world’s most valuable commodities. We are on the right track, but we need to produce more to keep up with the demand,” Nkandu stated.
The expo is bringing together experts, exhibitors, and farmers to explore how simple techniques can lead to big changes in profitability. Attendees are learning about the importance of value addition, which includes drying, hulling, and packaging at the farm level to improve the quality of their coffee.
Farmers like Toepista Nanyana from Kyamulibwa are already seeing the benefits.
“I have been struggling with coffee wilt, but I learned how to treat it and improve my soil during the training,” she shared. The expo is providing farmers with actionable solutions, ensuring they leave equipped to tackle challenges and boost their yields.
