Sheema District authorities have imposed livestock quarantine in the district following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease.
Dr.Amanya Joseph, the Sheema District veterinary officer, said they are trying to establish the magnitude of the disease in the district.
“Movement of livestock and livestock products have been banned with immediate effect in the district,” said Dr. Amanya.
According to Dr.Amanya the district has registered over 200 cattle that are affected.
“We have commenced routine checkup of the cattle in the district, we hope will help us to monitor the spread of the disease,“ said Dr. Amanya.
He attributed the persistence of disease in the district due to lack of enough vaccines to treat both the infected and disinfected animals.
Nabaasa Joel, Sheema District animal production officer said the disease spread through both sharing grazing and water points.
“The virus can spread rapidly through direct or indirect transmission, Animals always present high temperature which is followed by development of blisters, drooling of saliva, limping, and wounds on the hooves, tongue and Jaws”. Said Nabaasa.
Meanwhile Marble Rubanza, a resident of Kyamurari south in Bugongi town council whose 13 cattle have been infected with the disease, appealed to the government to look for possible measures to get the vaccine and help the affected farmers.
