It is important to know the water quality of your ponds since that is what determines the production of fish.
To do this, you need water quality testing kits. These can be got from several agri-input stores in Kampala. These include, a pH meter, which helps determine whether the water is neutral, acidic or alkaline.
If it is acidic, then you have to apply conditions, such as ‘fertilising’ the water using organic materials like animal dung to reduce acidity levels.
There is also the multi parameter metre, which measures the amount of oxygen, temperature, pH and conductivity.
Fish thrive on oxygen and if it is not enough, their lives are in danger. A very hot temperature is also not good for the growth of fish. The recommended pH for fish is 6.5.
