Kilak Farmers’ Co-operative Society in Amuru district has received a new tractor, donated by the agriculture ministry to boost crop production.
The tractor was delivered by Kilak North MP Anthony Akol during a meeting at Pabbo town council recently.
“With this tractor, you should cease practising subsistence farming and start commercial farming so that you fi ght household poverty,” Akol said.
Beneficiaries speak out
Joyce Ataro, a farmer from Kal ward in Pabbo town council, said: “I have been digging using a hoe but this tractor will increase my areage and uplift me from subsistence farming.”
Margaret Adong, a co-operative member from Gaya parish, said the donation was timely since they have been hiring tractors at a high cost.
Beatrice Akello, another farmer in Kilak North, said she used hand hoes and sometimes hired oxen to plough her gardens, which was expensive.
Humphrey Acellam, the chairperson of Kilak Farmers’ Co-operative Society, said members will use the tractor to increase their acreage.
“We have several groups that agreed to open up 20 acres of land to plant this season,” he explained.
