Emmanuella Oroma is the winner of the Best Farmer’s competition from the West Nile regions of Elgon.

Oroma, who hails from Nebbi district, stands out for her apiary enterprise. At her farm, Cananyara in Abindu division, Nebbi municipality, the 50-year-old keeps bees from which she processes honey sold in packs of 250g.

She also uses by-products of honey, namely, wax, honeycombs, bee venom, to make, wine, jelly and propolis.

Two decades in honey trade has seen her build a robust supply chain that now boasts of a network of beekeepers from all over the district.

“Production of honey and other products is all year round. My average, daily purchase of freshly harvested honey is 60kg to100kg,” she says.

“She has won because of that elaborate value chain process. Her honey is clean and she has a clear marketing strategy,” the judges observed.

This is the ninth year running that Vision Group, together with the Embassy of the Netherlands, KLM Airlines, dfcu Bank and Koudijs Animal Nutrition, are running the Best Farmers competition. The 2024 competition run from March to November, culminating in today’s awards ceremony.
