Early pregnancy detection is one way to determine if your cow will give you a calf each year thus maximizing the profitability of your farm.
Dr Hamid Rutaro, the Technical Manager of URUS African explains that with the Bioeasy Bovene pregnancy rapid testing kit, farmers do not need to wait for the heat period to determine if their cows can conceive.
He adds that after 28 days of service, with the help of a testing kit, a farmer will be able to know if their cow is pregnant.
“If some are found not to be pregnant, a farmer can prepare them to go back on heat and get services,” says Dr Rutaro.
How to use the kit
According to Dr Rutaro, an expert gets a sample of blood (it should be got around the cow’s tail), puts it on the testing kit and waits for 20 minutes.
He says if two red lines appear on the testing kit, then the cow is pregnant.
He also cautions farmers on the general management of their herd regarding feeding (pastures and water availability) and the animals’ health, saying that even if they are good breeds, when the management is poor, production will be low.
