One such innovation is the cattle crush, a simple yet effective tool that revolutionises livestock management.
Sabastian Ngambwa, a dairy farmer from Luwero district, shares his experiences and benefits of having a cattle crush on a farm.
A cattle crush, sometimes called a squeeze chute, is a sturdy and secure enclosure designed to hold cattle safely while they are examined, treated, or handled.
Typically made of durable materials like steel or treated wood, it features adjustable components to accommodate animals of different sizes.
The primary purpose of a cattle crush is to minimise stress and ensure safety for both the animals and the handlers during routine farm activities.
Ngambwa explains, “The cattle crush is a game-changer for farmers like me. Before installing it, managing my herd during health checks or deworming was a daunting task. Now, it’s efficient and stress-free.”
Benefits of a cattle crush
Handling cattle without proper equipment can lead to injuries and stress for the animals.
Ngambwa notes that the cattle crush provides a controlled environment, reducing the risk of harm.
“When cows feel secure, they are less likely to panic or hurt themselves. This translates to better health and productivity,” he adds.
Enhanced safety for farmers
Cattle are large and powerful animals that can unintentionally injure handlers, especially during medical procedures or routine checks. The cattle crush ensures the animals are securely restrained, protecting farmers from kicks or sudden movements.
Ngambwa recalls, “Before using a cattle crush, I once got a nasty bruise while trying to administer medication to a sick cow. Now, I work confidently without fearing for my safety.”
Streamlined operations
Time is a valuable resource on any farm. The cattle crush allows farmers to handle tasks like vaccination, artificial insemination, and hoof trimming more efficiently.
“Previously, I needed several helpers to hold a cow steady during procedures. With the cattle crush, one person can handle the job, saving time and labour costs,” says Ngambwa.
Improved herd health
A cattle crush makes it easier to conduct regular health checks and administer treatments promptly. Early detection and management of diseases are critical in dairy farming.
“Healthy cows produce more milk, and that’s the goal of every dairy farmer,” Ngambwa remarks.
Cost and accessibility
While the initial cost of a cattle crush might seem high, Ngambwa assures fellow farmers that it is a worthwhile investment. Depending on the size and materials, a standard cattle crush can range between sh3 million and sh5million.
Advice to fellow farmers
Ngambwa encourages farmers to prioritise safety and efficiency on their farms by investing in a cattle crush.
He also emphasises the importance of proper training for handlers to maximise the equipment’s benefits.
“A well-managed farm is a profitable farm. The cattle crush has transformed the way I work, and I believe it can do the same for others,” he concludes.
