Amuru district has banned the movement of cattle outside the sub-counties of Pogo and Lakang after an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease.

The ban was announced on Monday 13, 2023 after a sample of the disease sent to a government laboratory in Kampala tested positive.

Samuel Ochor, the Amuru District Veterinary Officer, confirmed the development but refused to give details saying he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Michaela Lakony the Chairman LC5 for Amuru district said that there were over 500 heads of cattle in Amuru District that were infected by the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).
Lakony added that they have written to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) requesting vaccines.

Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) is a severe, highly contagious viral disease of livestock.

The disease affects sheep, pigs, cattle, goats, and other cloven-hoofed ruminants.
