Vice President Jessica Alupo has donated 5,000 Kroiller chicken to women groups in her constituency of Katakwi district to alleviate them from poverty.
While delivering the Kroiller chicken on Tuesday, Alupo said that poultry keeping is one of the profitable businesses that can rescue people from poverty in a short period of time.
According to the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS), Poultry contributes to improved human nutrition and food security by being a leading source of high-quality protein in the form of eggs and meat.
Additionally, it acts as a key supplement to revenue from crops and other livestock enterprises, thus avoiding over-dependency on traditional commodities with inconsistent prices.
Alupo has targeted women because they are the one who are spending more time at home as compared to the men.
She believes that with women at the forefront, poverty eradication can be achieved and that will raise the standard of living in the country.
With poultry farming, it has a high potential to generate foreign exchange earnings through the export of poultry products to neighboring countries.
Though the poultry industry in Uganda is relatively new, it is highly prized in many social-cultural functions such as dowry and festivities. Alupo urged the beneficiaries to accord the chicken proper care so that they can benefit in the near future.
