For many farmers, snakes can be a threat to both safety and peace of mind. While they are an essential part of the ecosystem, keeping them away from farm boundaries is a priority for many who prefer not to deal with frequent snake encounters.
Fortunately, growing specific plants that naturally repel snakes can offer a safe, eco-friendly solution.
Evanice Manyiraho, an experienced herbal farmer from Kicwamba in Kabarole district, says it’s important to understand how plants repel snakes because certain plants produce strong scents that snakes find unpleasant.
She says these odours overwhelm a snake’s sensitive sense of smell, encouraging them to stay away. By strategically planting these species along your farm boundaries, you create a natural barrier that discourages snakes from entering your farm.
She says marigolds are popular in many gardens for their bright, cheerful flowers, but they are also a powerful snake deterrent.
The roots of marigolds grow deep into the ground and emit a strong scent that repels snakes and many other pests.
“Marigolds are one of the best choices to plant around your farm,” she says.
Plant them along your farm’s perimeter for a colorful and effective snake barrier.
Twaha Kakooza, a medicinal expert says lemongrass, known for its strong citrus scent, is another great option to keep snakes at bay.
He says this hardy plant is easy to grow and thrives in a variety of climates, making it a suitable choice for farm boundaries.
“The strong lemony smell of lemongrass irritates snakes and makes them avoid the area,” Kakooza explains.
Besides repelling snakes, lemongrass is also a useful herb for culinary and medicinal purposes, adding value to your farm.
Onions and garlic
According to Kakooza, both onions and garlic are known for their potent smells, and these strong odours are highly effective at keeping snakes away.
“I plant rows of garlic and onions along my farm borders, and they work wonders,” she says.
He adds that, “These plants are not only useful for repelling snakes, but they also provide an additional crop for harvest. When planting, ensure the bulbs are well-spaced to create an effective protective barrier around your farm.”
Mother-in-Law’s Tongue (Snake Plant)
The snake plant, also known as “Mother-in-Law’s Tongue” or Sansevieria, is one of the best natural repellents for snakes.
Its sharp, upright leaves make it an uncomfortable plant for snakes to navigate through. “The thick, upright growth creates a physical and sensory barrier that snakes don’t like,” says Manyiraho.
“Plant this drought-tolerant species along the farm boundary to create an impenetrable wall that snakes avoid,” she advises.
Wormwood, nature’s snake repellent
Wormwood is another plant that produces a strong scent snakes dislike. Known for its silvery leaves and aromatic properties, wormwood acts as a natural deterrent.
“This plant is tough and grows well in most conditions, making it ideal for the farm’s edge,” Kakooza explains.
Planting wormwood around your boundary ensures that snakes will think twice before crossing onto your farm.
