Over 800 farmers have been equipped with modern techniques in diary and livestock farming to boost their yields and reduce poverty levels.

They were trained to put emphasis on value addition and embracing technology such as artificial insemination and incubation.

The two days master class happened at the home of Frank Kuzaala, a prominent farmer and resident of Maddu in Gomba district.

Kuzaala’s farm sits on two square miles and has matooke plantations, maize, and cattle. He adds value to milk by making yoghurt and other dairy products which he supplies to different districts.

Kuzaala organized this master class to bring together budding and struggling farmers to help them add value to their produce and profit from agribusiness.

He also looks at forming farmers’ groups to maximize local and foreign markets.

“Agriculture is a profitable sector but many farmers have no access to good markets, knowledge and modern techniques,” he says.

Dr. Kirumira Mukasa chief veterinary officer of Masaka district urged participants to embrace technology. For example, Mukasa, who is an artificial insemination expert said today a cow can produce 10 calves through artificial insemination and incubation thanks to technological advancement.

“This technology is available in the country and every farmer should embrace it. You can get all the breeds you want,” he says.

Meanwhile, Kuzaala notes that many young people shun agriculture for politics hoping to get quick money but warned that such a move is not sustainable. Some even sell their land and inject money in elections only to grass when they lose. They forget that land is the gold they need to transform their lives.

“Young people should utilize the prevailing peace in the country to engage in agriculture rather than wasting time in politics,” he says.

Sylivia Nayebale, Gomba district woman Member of Parliament hailed Kuzaala for organizing the masterclass which equipped farmers with knowledge they need to benefit from agribusiness. She pledged to support other masterclasses.
