- Harvest the leaves of the plant, chop them into pieces and soak them in large containers for seven to 14 days. This is to ensure we get a thick liquid and so that the water can draw as much nutrients from the leaves as possible.
- Filter through a sieve to separate the leaves and the liquid. The resulting liquid is applied to crops.
- Due to its high concentration, dilute it with water to spread as much of it across the farm as possible. A 10-litre bucket of the green fertiliser can be diluted with 10 litres of water.
- Top dress each plant with 100ml of the fertilizer
Making Mexican sunflower pesticide
Mexican sunflower plants can be used in field and storage pest management.
Mexican sunflower acts as an insect repellent, hence controls insects when used to make the liquid fertiliser.
- Harvest leaves and young stems and crush them in a mortar and pestle.
- Add water to Mexican sunflower leaves and young stems crushed paste and sieve to get a clear liquid.
- Five litres of water is used to dilute 15kg of concentrated Mexican sunflower paste to form a clear liquid pesticide. This pesticide is used in controlling pests in vegetables.
