In 2019, Crystal Rutangye got married to Dr. Joe Bazirake Besigye and the couple settled in Kisaasi, in the suburbs of Kampala.
They started working from home. Rutangye is a writer and founder of Scribe House, a book publishing company while Bazirake is a postdoctoral researcher at Nelson Mandela University.
The couple loves gardening and having a small space does not limit their passion.
They set up sack and container gardens in the different corners of their compound. They grow spices and vegetables including Sukuma wiki, spinach, green pepper, mints, tomatoes and pumpkin among others.
Rutangye says, they split their time between their work and the garden.
“We spend some of our evening hours weeding, pruning and watering the garden,” she says.
On how they started, Rutangye says, her husband first bought sacks and pots. Thereafter, he bought planting soil and seedlings.
“He put the sacks in corners that don’t receive full sun. We keep watering, especially during the dry season,” she says.
The family has a steady supply of vegetables thanks to their garden.
