The agriculture ministry is to take charge of the Uganda Agribusiness Awards, the Government has said.
According to agriculture state minister Fred Kyakulaga, the move is aimed at increasing awareness of developments in the sector and recognising individual initiatives in the sector.
He made the revelation on Friday during the award-giving ceremony at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel.
The awards, in their second year running, are aimed at motivating, recognising and rewarding outstanding individuals and organisations that have contributed and innovated towards the development of the agricultural sector.
“We need to celebrate with each other to allow us to motivate the younger agriculturalists. This is going to go a long way to inspire our youth to work hard to be recognised,” Bwino said.
At the event organised by the Uganda Annual Agriculture Awards, organisations, seed companies, individuals, academia, institutions and agro machinery suppliers were recognised and awarded.
At the same event, agriculture state minister in charge of animal husbandry Bright Rwamirama was awarded for promoting good policies for the livestock sector.
At the same event, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) deputy representative, Charles Owachi in charge of Uganda programmes, said through such initiatives, there is increased awareness about challenges in food systems, that when addressed can eliminate hunger in Uganda. He also pledged FAO’s commitment towards the annual events.
Other winners were Pelum Uganda for promoting Organic agriculture, TUNADO and the Uganda Young Farmers Association, among others.
