Farm manager Gary Mbundire walks between chickens at the M5 Farming chicken farm outside Frankfort on May 9, 2023. Frankfort forms part of the Mafube Municipality where residents are forced to sit in the dark after the Gauteng High Court recently ruled in favour of keeping them locked into Eskom’s load shedding schedule after a battle between Eskom and Rural Free State, a subsidiary of Rural Maintenance who has been providing residents power from the photovoltaic solar plant situated in Frankfort. The impact of the court’s decision means the chicken farm will be subjected to more loadshedding. The farm already finds it difficult to keep their generators running due to the high cost of diesel which has already resulted in the death of approximately 500 chickens earlier this year.
