The Government through the agriculture and local government ministries is implementing a micro-irrigation programme supported by the World Bank through the Uganda Inter-governmental fiscal transfer’s programme.
Francis Abiriga, the focal person for the irrigation programme, said agriculture in Uganda is predominantly rain-fed with changes in climate, prolonged dry spells and flooding resulting in low productivity.
He added that the Government will support individual farmers through subsidy purchasing of irrigation equipment.
The programme targets farmers with at least 2.5 acres of land to grow vegetables, fruits, coffee and pasture, among others.
Grace Ozitiru, the district agriculture officer, said the programme will benefit 207 farmers.
