Winning Best Farmers competition helped Kange transform his community
Samuel Kange, 57, one of the Vision Group’s Best Farmers (2019) from Busoga region, has utilised the sh7m prize he got from the competition to transform his farm. The farm is located in Nawambidi village, Bulesa sub-county in Bugiri district.
The Best Farmers competition is organised by Vision Group with support from the Embassy of Netherlands, dfcu Bank, KLM Airlines and Koudijs Nutrition BV. The 10 winners share sh150m plus a learning trip to the Netherlands.
Kange’s earnings from the enterprises have since doubled, having injected the sh7m which energised the fish ponds, poultry project, the rabbit and piggery enterprises.
Using part of the money, Kange bought a chain link he used to fence off the 12 fish ponds in order to keep off predators.
Kange told Harvest Money that: “What I can testify is that the sh7m has changed the farm. It (the cash) gave me a good push.”
Kange has also introduced dairy cows to his farm
He also used part of the money to buy 3,000 local and improved chicks.
He now uses the daily generated chicken and rabbits droppings as manure on the 4-acre banana plantation. The droppings also act as feeds for the fish.
Kange’s farm has also transformed into agro-tourism hub and he is now a “celebrity” in his community.
