Ten beneficiary saving and credit cooperatives organisations (SACCOS), with over 150 members in Kobuin sub-county, Ngora district, have been boosted with 50 improved pigs (sows), worth sh15m.
Joyce Tukei, a beneficiary, said they were happy because their savings of sh800,000 could not enable them afford the five pigs, valued at sh1.5m. This was during the launch of the piggery project at Kobuin sub[1]county headquarters last week.
The pigs were donated by Juliet Achayo Lodou, the Ngora County Member of Parliament, to groups that heeded to the guidance to form groups for economic empowerment.
In her message to the beneficiaries, delivered by Charles Ekelot, her husband, Achayo said people should always select enterprises within their means as President Yoweri Museveni has always advised.
She cited projects such as poultry, commercial farming and piggery, which communities can engage in if they are to come out poverty.
“The President says Ugandans should drop traditional peasant farming. We are therefore encouraging people to embrace commercial farming,” Ekelot said. “These large white sows give a litter size of 10 twice a year and even if you sold each piglet at sh100,000, the group will get sh1m per round,” Ekellot said.
Dancan Musene, the Kobuin LC3 chairperson, said: “I am happy that all the 10 parishes in the sub-county have benefited and I am going to monitor them, as requested by Achayo.”
Ngora RDC John Stephen Ekoom presided over the ceremony.
