The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called upon men in the coffee business to involve women in the Plantation process something he said will enable develop the industry.
The Katikkiro remarked while launching season B of the 2022 coffee planting year at Mbiriizi playground in Lwengo District on Wednesday, August 10, 2022.
“I urge all men to involve women in the coffee business right from planting, looking after them. You can get a portion of the plantation to the women. If you find it uncomfortable, whenever you sell, entice them with a parcel of the money earned to your wife,” Said Mayiga.
He added, “Women are very crucial in this coffee program and sharing with them the coffee gains will morale boost them to continue looking after these coffee gardens.”
Katikkiro Mayiga was visiting coffee farmers in Lwengo Subcounty in the Kingdom’s Coffee plantation promotion campaign dubbed ‘Emmwanyi Terimba’ and asked that government supports Ugandans in the coffee industry to add value to the crop.
He said “I implore the central government to support Ugandans in the coffee industry mainly those who add value and leave giving incentives to only foreigners. By doing so, it helps in developing the coffee industry in Uganda.”
Mayiga also asked Ugandans to copy Ethiopians and start drinking coffee as they do on eating matooke they grow.
According to Mayiga, when Ugandans start consuming coffee, it will create an already market for the produced coffee and earn the country a lot of money.
Before the main rally at Mbirizi, Mayiga together with his entourage first visited four coffee farmers including Yosam Kafeero Muyambi alias Rwandan-Muganda who has a ten-acre coffee plantation and a cattle farm at Kyenvunikidde village, Muhigira Coffee Estate at Kabusirabo village, Wilson Ntambaazi at Kasserutwe and Lawrence Kabumbuli at Munyegenyo Village.
John Bosco Tumwesigye, the RDC Lwengo, thanked the Kingdom for taking up the coffee promotion initiative which he said will go a long way in aiding the government in its wealth creation agenda amongst the country’s households.
Isaac Ssejjoba, the Bukoto Mid-West Mp informed the gathering that it’s the coffee earnings that had enabled him come back into the position he is holding now after he had been defeated in the 2016 general elections.
The Kingdom’s state minister in Charge of Agriculture and Trade, Hajj Amisi Kakomo reported that the Kingdom had set up a company called Mwanyi Terimba Limited which will buy and export coffee and asked farmers to put more efforts into the business.
Robert Ssentamu, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority officer in Lwengo, applauded the Emmwanyi Terimba Campaign which he said will enable the country meet its 2030 target of exporting 20 million bags of coffee.
