Cattle Wedding Gifts Turned Around Kasabiti’s Life

To make it big in farming, you should always have passion for what you have ventured into.

Indeed, armed with passion for value addition in dairy farming, Betty Kasabiti has managed to flourish.

The productivity of smallholder dairy farms is generally low. Small-scale producers are facing many
challenges and constraints, which are partly responsible for the poor production performance.
Despite various initiatives to enhance quality at various stages of the dairy chain, many weaknesses still
exist. The hygiene and handling practices at the farm level are generally poor. The collection and transportation
of warm milk as well as the sale of unprocessed milk are still a big challenge as far as improving quality in
the dairy chain is concerned.

However, for Kasabiti the passion for value addition has paid off. With over 50 cattle given to the couple as gifts at their wedding, they managed to pick only 30 because of lack of enough land to keep them.

With the passion she had and the background in dairy farming, Kasabiti decided to turn this into her full-time job. She now makes yoghurt and cheese, and earns between sh20m and sh36m every month.
