The Dairy Development Authority has licensed 116 milk processing plants country wide with a processing capacity of 3.4 million liters up from 160 in 2021. The move according to the executive director of DAA, Akinkiza Samson Mpiira is to maintain the quality of milk and its products.
He made the revelation on Friday, while releasing a performance report for the Authority for the financial year 2021/22, at the Media Center in Kampala.
The processing facilities that are at cottage level, are in response to the effects of Covid 19 pandemic, that affected incomes of farmers, reducing their investment cash inflows and consequently limited their investment potential in the sector.
Because of the intervention, Akankiza said overall processing capacity stands at an average of 2.3million liters with more than 21 milk products country wide.
To further maintain the quality of dairy product, a total of 4319 dairy premises composed of businesses like milk factories, tankers, retailers and freezer premises were inspected to ensure safety of the products but also maintain the market of Uganda’s dairy products.
Uganda’s milk is exported to United States of America and Somali and existing export destinations t East Africa community, COMESA countries, Japan, India, Oman and Ethiopia, among others.
In the same year under review, Uganda exported milk and milk products worth USD102.6 million up from USD92.4 million the previous year,2021, added Akinkiza.
